Info or Tips on T-400 Barking the tires when it shifts Mods

Have rebuilt many stock transmissions before yet I have a guy who really wants me to do this. Any help would be appreciated. I have heard of blocking the 2-3 feed hole in the valve body and removing the piston spring and putting the piston back. Drilling out the 1 and 2 plate holes to .125 and the 3rd plate hole to no more than .140. I don't want to forget tricks with the case check balls. Any help along this avenue is appreciated. I'll check back in a day or so. Thanks ahead of time!!! Oh, and the guy has money to replace the broken parts I warned him about. It is a truck. A 4X4 with a 454 , 1974 Chevy. He doesn't care about gas prices either.

That's a big heavy truck to make "bark the tires". Espeically all 4 if they are big.

You probably got the mods you are mentioning from my posts here or on NastyZ28. They will not break parts when using a 34 element sprag and a cushion plate in the intermediates. Be sure you dual feed the direct clutches as I've shown. It firms up the 2-3 shift, and it allows the blocked accumulator to not make the part throttle 2-3 brutal.

Leave the 5 checkballs normally left in stock. It will shift plenty firm enough with the mods I mentioned. You CAN go a bit larger on the 2-3 shift, transGo goes as big as .156" but with the blocked accumulator and .140, you will usually get rubber going into 3rd on a car with slicks on a prepped track.

Up the line pressure using the PR spring from a TransGo Reprogramming kit.

That's it. It will shift FIRM at heavy throttle, but not be brutal at part throttle and it will live.

Had normal troubles gathering parts for swap. TELLICO 4X4.com was very helpful pinning down transfer case adapter kit to switch from a T-350 to a T-400. They had the T-400 27 spline output shaft I needed to match up for the NP 205 27 spline transfer case. Kit, # 50-3200, comes with all necessary brackets and components. May be sometime next week before I reply back on this project. At least when it shifts good it will knock some more rust off the body. Will do the Trans Go kit and other suggestions made if that is what the guy wants. Later, Dan.
