Inner/outer rocker panel replacement question?

I was wondering the correct way of replacing the inner and outer rocker panels on my 62 impala 4 dr. I still have some floor panel replacement to do as well but I figured I could remove all the doors and cut up an old bed frame to brace the door areas, cut out the old outer rockers, then inners, and finally weld the new panels in. It sounds easier than I know it really is but can anybody give me some tips as I have never done rocker panel replacements before. Thanks Kevin

If you haven't found this place...

I highly recommend it. More chevy info there than you can shake a stick at. A guy that posts by the name SWEEDE62 has got a TON of information for replacing rockers in a '62.

I'm doing my rocker in a '64 convertible right now. The biggest thing I can say is make sure you brace between the hinge and latch pillars. Check out my journal as I have pics on how I braced my convertible.

The other thing is, if you are going to purchase your inner and outers (verus fab them) they are not complete. The inners are missing the pinch weld seam where the get spotted to the tops of the outers. The outer rocker has a similar situation at the front by the pillar.

Good luck

re: Inner/outer rocker panel replacement question?

Great info and pics Modas. It looks like our rockers are in the same condition. I will spend some more time checking out the chevy talk website, from the first 2 pages it looks like almost every other question I will have can be answered. Also, that was a great idea with the bracing bolting from the hinge to the latch. I will need to do some fabing at work tonight. Thanks alot, Kevin

re: Inner/outer rocker panel replacement question?

Ok, do you recommend doing all this with the body on the frame? And instead of paying for new incomplete rockers at cars inc., how much should it cost to have a shop fab these up? I can make the outers at work but in 2 pieces, the inners look a little too complicated for what I have to work with at the shop. Thanks again for the help. Kevin
