Install 700r4 into 1978 1 ton chevy van ?
hi, hope every ones doing ok tonight..im taking a turbo 400 trans out of my 1978 1 ton chevy van and replaceing it with a 700r4 to hopefully get better fuel mileage.my question is will it hurt to run in overdrive without converter ingaged? sometimes you need to shut 12v off to disengage converter in town..i know on hills and such you need to drop to drive on the early 700r4..i don't know whether trans will overheat or not..what do you think? also on the tranny wireing can I put 12volts to the purple wire and ground the tcc wire since that's what the computer would do to complete the circuit??I appreciate any advice, thanks

Yes, you can install a simple Toggle switch etc.. to control TCC Lockup.
TCC Diagram >> http://www.hughesperformance.com/pdfs/HP700-R4.pdf Lockup Diagrams >> Lockup TCC Wiring From PATC site: " If you have a 1982-83-84 car or truck never drive it with the wires on the side of the transmission unplugged. This will overheat the transmission on a long trip. On a 1985 or later it is O K to have the wires unplugged, because of a design change made in late 1984. The only part of this transmission that is electronic is the torque converter lockup. You will still have all four speeds with the wires unplugged.
