There wouldn't be any holes in the carpet because there are cars that are the same as yours but have shifters on the column that wouldn't require a hole.
About the only thing you can do is remove the knob from the shifter, measure as accurately as possible, and cut the absolute smallest hole you can cut to get it over the shifter. You can always expand the hole after that. Cut a clean hole so you can replace it if you make a mistake. Get some carpet tape from a carpet installer to do any patching from the back side.

No one lives forever, the trick is creating something that will.
