Final stages of putting the expensive $$ hole back together. We find TDC on cylinder 1, line up the rotor, and slide in the distributor shaft. The gears appear to mesh, but the shaft still has a good 1/2" before it seats. It's a Mallory Break Point Marine Distributor and we have been told that all the distributors for this vintage 305 have the same length shaft. ??? Are you linie up the slot in the oil pump shaft and the dist. ??
It sounds like that is your problem.
If you look down the hole where the dist. is going you should see the top of the oil pump shaft, it has a slot in it that needs to engage a "pin" in the bottom of the dist. gear.
