Installing distributor on 305 reman
First off, a few disclaimers. Yes, I'm a girl. No, I'm not a mechanic. I know a small bit, but I'm the computer geek of the group who found the site. Our mechanic buddy and my Hubby are still kicking dirt and being frustrated, so I'm off to search for the solution. Lastly, I'm asking about a Chevy 305, yes, but it's a Mercruiser in a boat.
I'm an appraiser and frequent an appraisers board like this one and know how newer dummies asking obnoxious questions get flamed, so I'm really attempting not to be one. Any hints would be deeply appreciated, and if you're anywhere near Conchas Lake, NM this weekend (assuming success) a boat ride and a cold one are in order.
Final stages of putting the expensive $$ hole back together. We find TDC on cylinder 1, line up the rotor, and slide in the distributor shaft. The gears appear to mesh, but the shaft still has a good 1/2" before it seats. It's a Mallory Break Point Marine Distributor and we have been told that all the distributors for this vintage 305 have the same length shaft. ??? (this from the guys at Auto Zone, accuracy unknown) The engine is stated to be an '80-85 reman'd.
The engine came with the oil pump, however the AZ guys mentioned the oil pump shaft (?) may be too long. I'm truly hoping not, cuz it would mean jerking the whole thing over again.
Any thoughts? Is there a simple trick we're missing? Keeping my fingers crossed.

Are you linie up the slot in the oil pump shaft and the dist. ??
It sounds like that is your problem.
If you look down the hole where the dist. is going you should see the top of the oil pump shaft, it has a slot in it that needs to engage a "pin" in the bottom of the dist. gear.
I'm giving Hubby the info along with a few other goodies I've pulled from Google searches and they're gonna give her a try again this morning.
You might have to nudge the crank a little and it will drop the rest of the way in.
A couple of things to keep in mind. your crank turns twice as much as the rotor on the distributor turns. make sure your on the compression stroke of #1. Also your rotor will turn about another inch once the dist. engages the pump shaft so keep that in mind when lining up the gear and the rotor to cap. I believe there is like 12 rotor positions that the dist. gears allow. would be nice if there were 8. Once you find the perfect gear tooth, rotate the crank and it should drop right in. good luck.
