You ask if it was hard. Not for me.
Yep, staples 1/4x1. You ask how much it cost. I have no idea. I did mine myself. It was a 69 Chevelle SS. I did my own too....62 Pontiac. $350 for the top, 10 years ago. Probably more today. Tack it in, stretching the top was the hardest part.

I did it myself (never before). You definitely need to do you're homework though. There's a reason the shops charge a grand for it. Plan on it being one of the hardest things you done yourself. I just used a electric staple gun that you buy at Lowes for about $20 bucks and it worked good. Read all you can about the installation, get factory body manual for you're car and read it. The DIY website has a piece on redoing a top on a old T-bird thats interesting. Also the book "How to Restore You're Collector Car" has some good information too. Im not sure about your car but mine has that floating rear bow thats been talked about. On mine it sucked because I didn't have the old top on to use as a guide. And when I didn't get the wrinkles out of the quarters I had to take everything apart to tighten it up (since it all fastens together at the rear tack strip, the Well Liner, Window Curtain and Top) It took me three times to get mine good. In the end The Job wore my *** out. But Im glad I did it myself. Look at it this way "You can screw up 3 tops before you're at the price the shop charge" Look at my top here: http://www.geocities.com/twagor/
Good Luck and let us know how it all works out Tim 1971 Cutlass Convertible http://www.geocities.com/twagor/ Last edited by '71 rag top : 12-04-2004 at 09:39 AM. |
