I have an 84 z28 and my ring and pinion just broke. I was going to replace them but I decided to build it up instead. I was looking at aftermarket posi's and was wondering how hard it would be to install one. How much time would it take, what special tools would I need, and what would I have to do, beyond the obvious. Thanks.

Poncho is right, when setting up a rear there are critical specs that if incorrect will shorten the life of your new rear considerably. Take it to a pro, the labor isn't that costly.

I'd suggest a different approach. Since your third member is already trashed, buy the parts needed to rebuild it. Buy the posi unit you want to use. Get a good book with illustrations and / or a video (they are available) and do the work yourself. Take your time. Check what you do and then recheck it again. You will learn a new valuable task. You will have this new knowledge forever. You can help others with similar conditions. You will have the bragging rights that you did it yourself.
Anyone can take it to a shop and hopefully get the job done correctly. Only some are willing to learn something new.

I'm gonna have to recomend taking it to a shop to have it done too. Setting up a rear end for the first time with out having the luxury of having some one show you how to do it can be a difficult task and will probably not end up being done accurately with out proper tools and knowledge. As mentioned if it isn't set up right it will reduce its life and also create a howling noise that will drive you mad. I"m not trying to be discouraging but setting up a rear end is a bit of an art just realize what you are getting into.

If you are mechanically inclined, and can get the tools(borrow,rent,etc.) its not all that hard. You must have Patience as you will probably have to remove the carrier and pinion a few times. A helper is a bonus. Check out the Knowledge Base, it will refer you to quite a few good sites with all the info. Study it. Take your time and I recommend changing all the bearings. LOL, and let us know how you make out or what you decide. The knowledge you will gain is a super bonus.:thumbup:

Sort of like a layman practicing brain surgery - you would have to be very lucky for the patient to live. You will be in over your head. Unless you have access to a press and the proper tools, you are going to have quite a time getting things done. I've seen even the experts have problems getting things set up right. Also nothing like trying to generate about 400 foot pounds of torque to compress the new crush sleeve on the pinion shaft when you are lying on your back under the car with about a foot of room to swing the wrench.

Thank you to all those with POSITIVE information. Posi and gears are in perfectly with no problems. Goes to show you anyone can do it...... It doesn't take a brain surgeon to do it at all. It just takes a research and patience, which was quoted from one above. Anyways, thanks for the help.
