I bought a truck that had a 4L80E in it originally but it's long gone-never seen it. Everything is there including the two piece driveshaft.
I am assuming the 4L80 had a bolt on yoke.
I will probably end up using a trans with a slip yoke. Will that work? How?
I might use a 700R4, a long tail th400 or if i have to a th400 with a bolt on yoke. I really want overdrive.
The truck is a '92 chevy silverado 3500 one ton.
I know it may need a longer section of driveshaft.
My main concern was having two slip yolks, I guess the carrier bearing will hold the one in the transmission and the slip yoke behind the bearing will be the one that actually slips.
So I don't need to worry about the front yoke falling out of the trans I guess? Even if the bearing fails?
I know, but I'd rather not find out the hard way and have it fall out. I'll give it a shot though.
I'm going to build a 700 with good frictions, the better 3-4 pack, vette servo, bigger boost valve and int/rev valve. And a TransGo 2&3 kit. Nothing too wild, I think it'll work ok for what I'm using it for.
Thanks for the information guys.
It's been my experience that most two piece drive shafts use two slip yokes. One coming from the tranny and the other one on the front of the 2nd drive shaft. Older GM trucks with two piece shafts receive the 700R4 quite well and so should yours. We built a 72 and put in a TH400 and after miles and miles of waiting for one more shift, we yanked it and put in a 700R4 and it came alive-- mor go on takeoff, very quiet at cruise, and improved fuel economy.
I myself have almost the same dellima, mine is "90" 2500 GMC 383ci W/400 trans 2peice shaft but the problem putting 4L80e in mine is no electronics. I might suggest looking for a replacement 4L80E. You have all the hookups on yours , talk to a local tranny shop to see what years will fit yours. 700R4 or 4L60E [same trans 4L60 is electronic] has the small output shaft. Hope this will help.

Jason finished the truck and traded it off months ago.
