Installing th400

I'm trying to replace a trashed short tail shaft th400 with same. I tried lifting tranny from front but didn't have enough room in the rear to clear the cross member. I am now in the process of trying to lift from the back and I have the tail resting on the cross member but the bell housing will not clear the center bolt on the pressure plate. Any comments welcome. Thanks.

Check the crossmember...

It should unbolt from each end, then slide it back so it clears the tailshaft. Sometimes removal is easier than leaving it up in the car and trying to work around it.

WHAT???
Turbo 400 has no pressure plate.
Remove crossmember from car; unbolt trans bellhousing and torque converter bolts and remove assembly from car. I am assuming, dangerously, that the cooler lines, shifter linkage, driveshaft, and kickdown wire are already removed.....

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the cross member was welded in or bolted in. I did look at it very briefly but I didn't see any bolts. I did see break lines and fuel lines running above where the bolts should be. I'll have to look closer.

Yes all of the above except the cross member were removed on removal. My bad, the flex plate.
