intake gasket metal plates

sbc intake Edelbrock gasket set came with 4 of these little rectangle metal plates with a hole thru the center. I have never used these things and after an hour of Internet searching I have came up empty as to what they do or how to install them or even if I should install them. I have a 283, 305 heads, Performer Intake, no EGR, Quadrajet, and it's hot in Texas. So edumacate me.

I believe they block off the heat to your carb..Heat riser. In cold climates you don't use them. We use them around here.

Seems strange they would be called heat riser if they block off heat ...but whatever. So there are 4 of them which means they can be used for the center holes in the intake to block exhaust gases from heating up the carb. But you could also use them for partially blocking off the water jacket at the front of the intake. Seems as tho that would restrict cooling. yes? About the installation of these plates: they have a 1/32" lip around the perimeter; does that lip go against the heads? plate sits on heads but with lip squished into gasket? lip go against against the intake? Plate go against the intake but with the lip squished into the gasket? Incidently; I have never used these in my entire life of backyard mechanicing.

They aren't called heat risers...they block the heat riser...why would you consider using them to block your coolant passages?

I don't know why one would block the water passages.....but there were 4 of those plates and 4 holes in the intake that size.
But then it ocurred to me.....are you suppose to install the plates one on the head side of the gasket and one on the intake side of the gasket; thus sandwiching the gasket with the plates?
