intake gasket thickness

I am trying to figure out what intake gaskets i should use for my 400 sbc. the heads are going to be the stock 1.94/1.5 heads. The intake is going to be an edelbrock dual plane. I am wondering what size ports i have, (small, medium, large) and what thickness i should be using. Any suggestions?

also, i was cleaning the pistons off today and noticed the number 9 stamped on the edge of each piston. Would this indicate a 9:1 compression ratio?

With stock heads and that manifold, the regular run of the mill Felpro intake gaskets will be fine. If you had some "raised runner" heads, then you'd need to make some changes.
Thickness doesn't come into play with stock intake gaskets.

As far as the #9 on each piston, its anyone guess what its for. Compression ratio is determined using deck height, head cc size and piston dish/flat/dome construction.

My experience with the regular Felpro gaskets is they are always a tad bigger than the runners on the stock heads. The intake will probably match the gaskets better than the head. Unless you want to spend the time port matching the heads to the intake, its not really of much use. Unless you are looking for that extra 1/4 horse power, just bolt em on and go for it.

Just to add some info to that already given, with the heads and manifold you will be using, the Fel-Pro intake gasket to use is the 1256. This has the port openings that most closely match the ports in your heads and manifold. This gasket is a Fel-Pro Print-O-Seal which has the silicone bead around the ports and water passages for extra sealing. Fel-Pro also has a 1204 gasekt that has the same size ports but is not a Print-O-Seal.

Fel-Pro makes 13 different intake gaskets for the small block Chevy so I thought it might help to give you some part numbers.
