intermittent knock, whats your guess

hi folks, another question for those smarter than I.i have a 90 bronco 2 ,2.9 litre , so here's the problem.upon start up the truck runs fine , sometimes it taps like a bugger, sometimes not.i can be driving along fine ,then it will tap like theres no oil in it (sounds like 1 valve ?)it goes from running like a million, to a half milion mile motor sound.in seconds flat.
i am thinking it is a bad rocker arm(bent?)as it is intermittent and the motor is kinda putting and losing power while under accelleration ..but only when its noisey.it could be a valve??or maybe the oil pump is weak???
any opinions will be greatly appreciated.mike . the more ideas the more things i can check...

Check for a bad EGR valve or the connection at the EGR.
