Intermittent Problem - 4L60E

I have a 94' Suburban with a 4L60E.

It was rebuilt about 22,000 miles ago and ran flawlessly for about the first 18,000. Then it started to have an intermittent problem. This is maybe once every 2-to-4 weeks between episodes. I have not changed the fluid and filter yet and am planning to do that soon. But before I drop the pan, I figure I will run this by the experts to see if anything else should be done at the same time.

Symptoms:
  • It happens after the vehicle has been driven once in the day. So it is a restart condition
  • It idles high when first put in, like converter is not engaging
  • It will upshifts very hard
  • It will not downshift when accelerating
  • It feels like it is slipping when in high gear or overdrive
  • I am pretty sure the lockup converter is not locking when driving
  • It will do it in cold or hot temps, damp or dry outside

About 99% of the time it drives and shifts perfectly. But every so often, it has the above described problem. I can let it set for 30 minutes or more and the problem is gone. The majority of the time the Suburban is not driven far, but it concerns me if we where on a road trip or having to get on the interstate.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, Ed

Total Mileage on the vehicle?

have seen the engine check light on?

Does the engine check light come on when the igntion key is first turuned to the 'run' position?

is the tranny full of fluid?

Has the computer been scanned for codes or code history?

many items you describe should set a trouble code of some type.

Is the speed_o functioning correctly?

Does the engine run good?

Could be many things that is feeding incorrect info to the PCM or an internal problem.

Total Mileage on the vehicle?
268,500 miles

have seen the engine check light on?
It stays on since the TBI system is no longer installed. I run the engine using a TPI from my 91' GTA using a 7727 ECM. The TPI harness has jumpers for TPS, MAP and distributor.

is the tranny full of fluid?
Yes and it looks good

Has the computer been scanned for codes or code history?
Just scanned it and came up with a few associated with the fact that the TBI is disconnected. But I did see coolant temp sensor is low and TPS is low. I noticed that the TPS is only .49-.50 volts at idle and should be .54 on Speed-Density. But is was shifting fine when the TPS was reading low.

Is the speed_o functioning correctly?
Yes, but on very rare occasions it will jump around. But this never coincided with the transmission shifting problem.

Does the engine run good?
Yes. It is a stock replacement crate engine with only 32k miles on it, running a TPI system.

Could be many things that is feeding incorrect info to the PCM or an internal problem.

I hope it is nothing internal. I may replace the TPS and change the fluid/filter and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions, Ed
Perhaps I will replace the TPS
