Introductions are in order...

I have been a member here for some time and have even asked one or two questions but felt it was about time I said hello to everyone.

My name is Dave Casson and I live, for now, in Gaithersburg, MD. I have been into hot rods and street rods for some time now. I currently own a 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible. Will post pictures just as soon as I figure out how.

My way, foolishly enough, has given me permission to build a car. I am currently working on ideas as to what to build and what to do in the build for it. I have sever ideas from a '66 AC Cobra to a Speedstar by RatsGlass or a '33 Trakstar. Other ideas include a '50s or 35/36 pickup and '34 coupe. Decisions, decisions. My budget has not really been set yet but would like to keep the build to between 30-40K if possible.

Will certainly have plenty of questions and need loads of help as I have never done this much work on a car before, but then again that is half the fun, learning.

I certainly plan to post pictures of the project as it progresses but I am now doing the preliminaries like choosing a kit, engine, drive train(thinking of AWD) and so forth and so on.

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Man, my wife has NO idea what she has gotten me into.

Well that is about all I have for now. If you would like to know anything else, please ask!

build something, anything?

So your going to build a rod? Or is it a kit car? There are a lot of project vehicles out there and many kits to choose from too. Most important that you enjoy the experience and the time it takes to make it right for you. This is a great Hobby, enjoy yourself!

Project...

Well I have not decided on whether or not it will be some sort or varience of a kit or build from scratch.

I think, for the purposes of easing into the hobby I will start out with a kit of sorts relying on most of the parts to be prefabricated. As my experience grows, I will get into the other end of the spectrum and actually fabricate most if not all the parts needed for the car.

You see the cool thing is, when I am done building this car, and I sell it, I can build another. I have several I want to build. Just not sure which model to start with.

Since the AC Cobra is fairly popular and appears to be somwhat easier to build I may start with that and work my way up to a complete custom build.

My project begins...

Well, I ave great news. We finally bought a house with a nice 2 car garage. So, I will be starting my project.

Here is what I have decided to do:

Gibson Body: '33 Ford Viper
Engine: 350 Chevy Crate Motor.
Transmission: 700R4 attached to a Typhoon Transfercase
(This will be an AWD car)
Suspension: Unknown - Need to find out what will work with this transmission and transfercase.

I want to try to make the car a hardtop convertible and I am going to use specila tinting glass I found for the windows. It will be chopped at least 2" and have shaved suicide doors.

I plan to visit the Gibson plant and chat with the fellas face to face about what I want to do to see if it is really feasable.

The rest of the parts and color I will choose as I go.

Thats the start of it for now. I have a lot of leg work and inquiries to make, but that is the general idea for my project car.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks!

Thanks...

Thanks! Actually mine is red. Will hopefully be able to Avatar it before to long.

Since I am starting my project I will be posting here often.

Funny thing is, I don't seem to really get any responses. Everyone seems friendly enough here but I just don't seem to get the support I thought I would get from the site. Must be my deoderant?

Will scower the bulliten board and see what I can find for tech tips and suggestions and continue to post queries to help me out. I am fairly new at building or working on cars but I am doing this to learn and have fun.

BTW, nice car!

Projuect might be on hold...

Well, I broke the power steering unit to my '66 Mustang and while fixing it noticed a few other things that need tending to. I already had planned to have the car stripped for re-painting but now it looks like I will be doing almost a complete restore of the car before I start my project car.

Will keep you informed.

If you are intent on building the 34 as a AWD try to get to a show that displays Troy Treplainers (sp) quadraduece and really check it out. Sounds like a good project once you get the Mustang redone.

Good idea...

Yeah, I thought about that as well so I dropped Rad Rides By Troy a couple of e-mails and they where nice enough to give me some info.

If I get a chance I may try to stop out there and see the car or wait until it is at a show I plan to go to.

I am sure I can get it to work, just a matter of time and finding the parts.

One of the things I also really want to do is a sectioned convertible hardtop roof that slides in behind the seats (similar to the new Chevy SSR). I think that might be the hardest thing for me to figure out.

Thanks for the input and any other help would be greatly apprectiated

yet another twist...

Well, my wife does not know when to stop. She has now also given me permission to attain a "project" car and rebuild it. Again, my only stipulation is that I sell it when I am done.

I would like to do a '67 GT500 or kinda rare muscle car (64-73) if possible.

Now I need to decide which project to take on.

Any ideas?
