Jag IRS or 12 Bolt Posi?

I'm building a 31-5 Window Coupe. It currently has a Chevy 12 bolt posi (don't know what gears yet, but was told 411's). I have a chance to get a late 70's Jag rear out of an XJ6. Would it be worth the hassle? What's a good price? (he said $700 complete). My BIL told me to make some money on the 12 bolt and buy a Ford 9".

Also, if not worth the swap in my car, how about for my son's 38' Chevy Coupe with a 10 bolt Chevelle rear (non-posi)?

Any advice appreciated.

I am going to assume your 12 bolt is setup with leaf springs. If that is the case it more than likely came from a Nova or Camaro which makes it worth quite a bit. There are plenty of Nova and fist generation Camaro rodders out there willing to pay $1200 for a 12 bolt. I would not mess with the Jag rear end unless you plan on spending some serious bucks on axle shafts, 4 link suspension and associated hardware that goes along with it. The Ford 9" is vastly more plentiful and is more than strong enough. Also the prices on them are still reasonable.

Everyone has their own opinion of Jag rears ... but I have no use for them.

1) hard to find parts
2) not so easy to properly install
3) not as strong as a 9 inch Ford.
4) Without chrome plating ... not really pretty
5) The WOW factor is long gone ... Been seen and done a lot

When properly installed ... and with the right coil overs shocks ( 4 of them ) ... they can ride nice.
I cut one out of a Deuce sedan ... years ago. Put a 4 link and 9 inch Ford under it ... never regretted it ...

Early units with inboard discs are a pain to work on..even bleeding is difficult. Mostly have to drop the entire IRS on E's and sedans.. Calpiers heat with exhaust routes to close to center..on a driver car.
Show cars..different..

There was a time I wanted to put a IRS E-Type under my 120..that idea has passed...
Needless complication for my purposes..

I put a Jag under my T-bucket after running a Chevy 10-bolt for a couple years. My Jag is out of a '77 XJ6. There is a lot of info on Jags on the 'net, especially in the Cobra forums. I didn't think it was that big a deal to set up, but then I did a lot of research first. Oh, and I paid $200 for my Jag (I'm in Kansas, so that may have something to do with the price).

Vince, actually it currently has coilovers and ladder bars.

After all I've read I think I will probably stick to the 12 bolt or possibly change to a 9". I'm planning on buying a "Last Refuge" frame with a 8" rear kickup, cross member, tranny/motor mounts. The state of the current frame is not what I want nor does it look safe or straight (welds & rear end). I'd like to stick with the coilovers and ladder bars, change my front wishbones to hairpins and change my reverse corvair box to a vega box.

Thanks again for everyones thought and opinions. They're very important and helpful to us newbies.

I agree, if the geometry currently on the rear is correct that would be the wise thing to do.

Vince, the geometry of the rear end and the frame they built is visibly out of kilter (sp?). The welds look like a child did them. All the welds will have to be ground out.
Nothing on this project has been done right (previous owners) except for the top chop which seems pretty decent. I've sanded out about 10 lbs. of bondo and plan on having my son reweld all the replacement panels.
