Jeep Cherokee

I've been offered a 4.0 L Jeep Cherokee, and it's in pretty good shape and value for the money.
By the time you read this, I may well have bought it already.
Point is, performance isn't quite much.
6L 4000cc, 177 HP, and it's lugging quite a bit of metal.
So, what afetr-market bolt ons are there that can improve performance, considering the car's got EFI and it must pass a compliancy test every 24 months?
Any way I can tune it to... 250 HP?

Thanks

Think I could come visit sometime?

Had to ask anyway, I havn't seen to many modified jeeps, newer jeeps anyway. Most people do just like a friend of mine did, he gutted the old V-6 crated it up and sold it and bought a crate chevy 350 bone stock and put it in the jeep. It works great and isn't very dificult. Along with the 350 he put some 33" tires and some other bush goodies. the stock 350 throws out the amount of HP your looking for and should pass inspection perfectly fine since it a stock engine. Then again, never lived in italy. Not much help, but its about all I can't tell you.

Thanks for the comments guys
The Cherokee has a 4.0 liter straight six engine, not a V6, and I could only swap it with AMC's V8. Anything else would mean having the Italian DOT guys keeping the car for a month just to "test and inspect it", including disassembling the engine and dyno-testing it for HP rating, testing brakes and what-have-you to see how it copes with the increased horsepower... in short, "maybe it could pass as a one-of-a-kind prototype"
What?!!! Gotta be outa your mind!
So, I was hoping in a blower of sorts that'll fit, or something like that, or special pistons and cam and rechipping the ECU.
Anyway, I'm still haggling for the car, so who knows.

What do you want to do with your jeep. I had one and it was not a bad car, but it was a CAR! The motor was plenty peppy for just driving around and not bad in low range, except for the lack of clearance. It wouldn't tow squat though. Had to put overloads on just to tow my boat (18' aluminum). First time I hooked up the boat it felt like I was climbing a mountain! It had enough torque, but the drivetrain is definately car. I traded for a pickup (Dakota-ok), then traded for a bigger pickup ('92 ex. cab Silverado 4x4-loved it!), then traded for a bigger truck ('93 GMC ex.cab 4x4 longbed 6.5 Turbo Diesel-love it more!). If you want a decent car, buy the Jeep. If you want a truck, buy a truck!

Hope everyone read the post from Italy---
IT COULD HAPPEN HERE!!!!!!

If someone can get 300+ horsepower out of a slant six, you can get a lot more out of the good ol' 4.0 liter straight six. Two more cylinders couldn't hurt, though...except on gas.
