Jeep shifter for ford top loader 4 speed trans

Do any of you guys or gals out there have any info RE putting a jeep shifter on a F-o-r-d top loader 4 spd???? I think I'd like to put that combo behind my 8ba flatty; it has the removable cast bell hsg and a '39 top-loader trans now ( w/ a closed driveline that will need to go away w/ an open-drive conversion for the " banjo " rear end) Do you use a 3 spd shifter, using the reverse position to engage low gear then maybe a lever/cable to operate the 4 speed's reverse after putting the main shifter in neutral?? What kinda bell hsg and adapter should be used? Wow, a lotta questions for a "newby" , huh?
THANK YOU in advance.

Actually there is an easier way..Look for a ford pickup trans withe the RUG/RAT designation from an early to mid 70's pickup..those have the old fashioned top loader shifter and are 3spd with O/D have a std Ford bolt pattern and should bolt right up to your bellhousing..Found in f-150 with six cyl trucks mostly..

I've done it

I have put a Jeep shifter in a Ford toploader style transmission. If you can find the article by Frank Oddo in the Dec.1990 Street Rodder, it covers everything. The number on top of my 4 speed Jeep shifter is C-2604208. Hope this helps! Jeff
