Yep, that's why I went to Las Vegas to get my 2 gallons.
Luckily I had my friend from Vegas with me because the first thing they asked was, "You from California? ". My friend whipped out her Navada DL and no problems. |

Blitz
Hi all~ I read all previous 5000 pages on blitz a couple of times and decided to try it out on my ride, a 89 bmw 325ix. Luckily there is a john deere store about 10 minutes away from me.
![]() Blitz black - $27 hardener - $30 primer - $8 thinner - $8 Including the tack cloth, sandpaper (300-400 grit) mixing cups, tape, filters, etc the cost of materials for the whole job was less than $100~ and well worth it. ![]() I used this cambell hausfield gun from a set and a compressor that put out 3.7cfm of air at 40psi~ it was a 1.5hp pump if that gives you an idea if yours is big enough. I had the gun tuned to spray at 40psi and practiced on some wood and stuff laying around before practicing on my bumper that I had pulled off the car. ![]() John Deere primer is school-bus yellow! I had previously painted my car with rattle can flat black and it started looking pretty bad~ kind of grey-ish chalky type with track marks. The JD blitz black said you could paint it over metal or paint or whatever, so I figured that with some really good scuffing it would stick to the old paint too. I hope it holds out, it seems pretty tough. I mixed the paint with 8 parts paint, 1 part hardener, 1 part thinner~ the mixing cups I used worked out great. I just filled them with 16 oz of paint, then 2 oz of thinner stirred in, then 2 oz of hardener stirred in. Nothing on the label of the hardener said you had to give it any time to 'set-up', so I poured about 5 cups of this paint and went back to refill when my gun went out. ![]() ![]() ![]() When I practiced on the bumper I found that I am really horrible at painting and if I sprayed the black too thick it would run like it was in a marathon~ and also when you spray it thick like most other car paint it is almost a semi-gloss and not flat at all. I decided to do a lot of light coats and a heavy-er coat but never really lay it on super thick. At first the paint had a almost textured kind of look but then the thick-er layer got rid of most of it, and a day after paint it has smoothed out a lot. Also if you were wondering, the car was painted under a tree because the sun was blazing outside at noon~ i figured I could live with a few bugs in the paint over having one side of the car fried and messed up by the heat. striping wasnt an issue except on the hood roof and trunk~ the horizontal surfaces. It had nothing to do with the paint though, it was just I had a hard time holding a gravity fed gun sideways at a 90 degree angle to the surface~ and I really needed a stool to get a good reach across the top of the car without leaning into the side. all in all~ blitz black rocks. I wish I had done it a long time ago~ if you guys have any questions just post them up here or shoot me an email @ fd63828@appstate.edu thanks -Quint |

that looks really good, how do you think that would look on a 3rd gen camaro with the late rs body kit? i think that would look really mean. i was also thinking the copper color they use on acuras of the early 2000's, but i bet that wouldnt come out as good concidering the only thing i have ever sprayed was a fender

Looking good!
That 325iX looks great! My 2002 turned out a little streaky especially on the roof but it's just the JDBB rattlecans. It is holding up pretty well so if it turns out I can tolerate a black car with no a/c in the Georgia Summer heat, I'm going to do it with the for-real BB in the Fall.

What gun is that?
Hey Q5Quint the Beemer looks great!! That is the same compressor I have but mine is a Craftsman so its red instead of yellow. I was wondering what gun that is you have, I see the CH owners manual in there but what is the model number and where did you get it. Thanks.

The gun is from the campbell hausfeld 'iron force' set.
The model number from its documentation is IFS580~ I got the set for xmas a few years back and just now have used it. It is the only gun I have ever used, and I would say it works great. The only downside I can see is that because it is gravity fed it has problems when you hold it sideways to paint horizontal surfaces like roofs hoods and trunks, and therefore ends up making too light of a coat of paint there and striping occors. If I was a better painter I could probably make it stop, but I am not so it happens. I will say that it is 95% less streaky than the rattle cans~ the sides of my car look nearly perfect, except the blits black really brings out every nick and ding I missed when I was doing body work! ![]() ![]() Thanks for all the positive replies~ I think blitz would make any car look pretty mean ![]() |

I am in Boone NC now~ but I went to the JD place in Greenville NC where I was visiting my parents.
The striping only kind of exists on the hood roof and trunk~ it is more like the paint gun wasnt held at exactly 90 degrees from the surface being sprayed and some droplets flew far enough to dry in the air and then hit the car. This makes a kind of 'rough' pattern that could be wetsanded out... but I havent tried yet. ![]() The sides look nearly perfect with NO striping ![]() Notice the 'rough' spots on the hood and roof~ After I washed the car the first time I went over the hood with just a soft sponge and most of the roughness came off which leads me to believe that some wetsanding would get rid of this. I never wetsanded the car after spraying it, and didnt really intend to. Of course if you are thinking about doing this make sure to have a stool or something so you dont have to lean over the car and hold the gun sideways. As far as a method and spray pattern... I painted the front bumper first with a light coat then a thick coat and decided that a thick coat is almost too glossy, so I went over the car with probably 4 or so light coats followed by a 5th heavy-er coat. I never really layed it on because I was afraid it would run. I just went around the car hitting every panal till I felt like I was done. Pretty simple and hard to mess up. |
