3 coats is fine. Get too heavy and you will run into problems. Gun set up is the biggest thing here. Make sure your gun tip is big enough to spray this stuff... If you find it splottching like that then next time add a touch of thinner or reducer in it, just a little. That should help thin it out and spray/lay it out nicer.

I painted my 52 Pontiac Blitz Black about a year ago and it's held up great. It sit out some during the winter until I was able to get it in the garage and snow did not hurt it a bit. It hasn't faded any and looks as it did the day I put it on, BUT i'm getting bored of it on my car now and want to paint my car a Burgandy. My question is, can you paint over blitz black? I'v heard rumors that you can't, but I don't see what the problem would be? I could see not being able to paint lacquer over it, but painting enamel over enamel, I can't see there being a problem? Anyone ever been down this road before?

I have also read that about not being able to paint over it but here is the email of the dude from valspar that answered my question about being able to put it over rattle can primer. He also answered some other questions at the begining of this monster thread. smahady@valspar.com (shawn mahady). Good luck.

Maybe John Deer has a Blitz Burgandy that would be compatible with the tractor enamel, just a thought....

Just find a John Deere dealership, they all have a parts department, and have them order the stuff you need.....the best part, if you do it this way you dont pay shipping and hazmat charges, I did this a few years back on my 49, the dealer here didnt carry it, but they can get it.

Depending on the Burgandy you get (brand, single or bc/bb, etc etc) I wouldn't take the chance. Best to just strip it and that way you have no worries 5 years down the road.

I sent Mahady an email earlier and here was his responce:

Dave:

Yes you can paint over Blitz Black with another coat of primer and/or
enamel paint. If your original Blitz Black paint job was successful and
had good adhesion to the vehicle, you next color topcoat should be fine.

I don't plan to put $1,000 paint on this car. I can get just as nice look out of paint I get for about $85-120. I'd really hate to have to strip this car again unless I absolutely have to since last time it took me about 2 weeks. I just have a few minor dings I want to fix before I reseal it, and paint it.

Thanks for the replys aswell,
Dave

Dave, you can't get the same look or durability from $85-$120 paint compared to the premium lines so don't fool yourself. $120 worth of paint and materials to do a complete repaint will only buy you bottom of the barrel quality. Post some pics when you get her done. Bob

Dad (who does my painting for me) painted a CJ7 about 9 years ago with paint that cost less than $80 and the gun was only $19.99 and believe it or not it still shines as good as it did the day he put it on there. I don't think it's as much as the paint as it is the painter. Still like a mirror finish.

Quality

I agonized over painting my 66 Fleetside for months. Reading these 20+ pages of discussions did not leave me with a clear idea of what was what. There are folks here that say JJDB is total junk and other who swear by it. I did my own amateur body work and an old time body and fender man taped it primed it and shot it for $300. Counting all the filler, sandpaper and paint I probably spent another $200. It's been on for close to a year and it looks fine. It gave me the look I wanted and along with my 71 Nova Baby Moons and the Smithy's mufflers on my 350 I'm "crusin for burgers"!

Looks good! I am looking to do the same thing on my '64 C10. How many gallons did your truck take? I bought 2 and I am hoping that is enough.

OT - how do the Smithy's sound? I was thinking of them for a classic sound. Thanks.

2 Gallons will be more than enough for your 64 C10. I bought 1 gallon and did my 52 Pontiac which I know has more area to paint than your C10. 1 Gallon covered my car great, but I was just about out before I could get the trunk lid perfect. There's a slight fade in my trunk lid and that's it. Another quart and it would have been fine. The blitzblack on my car has held up great aswell the past year. It hasn't faded any. I like it, but it's time for a change for me.

Also I wanted to add that the other day I had an aircleaner which I painted with the blitzblack paint about the same time I did my car and to test and see if there was a reaction to enamel paint over it... I primered half of it, then did the whole thing with fire red enamel paint and it turned out great. No blistering at all on either side. So i'm pretty sure now that you can paint over this JDBB paint with enamel paint.

Club Coupe is right, I had to buy two gallons but only used one. I don't have paint equipment but I di find some rattle cans way down in Americus that I use for touch up.

The Smithy's are awesome, great rumble at idle, when you jump on it it roars and backing off you get great loud pops. I have a new 350 in her.
