Van sickle tractor paint

I believe that Van sickle is similar to John Deere BB, it can be found at a lot of farm and ranch stores like Big R, $24 a gallon $9 a qt and the hardener is $12 a 1/2 pint, I am painting a 31 frame with the satin black, but it is available in most tractor colors 3 reds, oranges, whites, greens, and so on, flats satin and gloss. It also has a rust inhibitor added so for spraying that rusty rod that's a plus.

Just another option for a cheaper flat or satin black paint and order-able online.

Enamel will go over lacquer but lacquer will not go over enamel.

I think the biggest thing I would be worried about is that with time lacquer will shrink. When it does, it will pull everything on top of it off. This doesn't happen all the time but it does happen. How do I know? Well the '64 truck I got had a lacquer finish done back in the mid '70's. Some areas a just fading away to the original paint. The hood area has been shrinking over the last 6-8 months and is pealing up (actually curling up, kind of cool looking). At this rate, I'll be able to scrape off most of the paint on the hood in the next few months, without much effort.

Good luck!

Just sneaking in a reminder, because I keep seeing this thread come up -- if anyone has any new information to add to the John Deere Blitz Black wiki article, please go for it. If you're not sure how to add to wiki articles, check this out: 8 sentence quick-start guide.

I know this discussion is popular, but the longer it gets, the less accessible the information within it becomes.

From what I have gathered, that tractor paint is similar to Rustoleum which is thinned with mineral spirits.

I'm going to get some of this acrylic enamel: http://paintforcars.com/

J D blitz

I have used JD paint on a lot of jobs it is like most enamels but don't use to much reducer it runs easy. Put it on a bit heavy and it will level out in a few Min's. I have used all kinds of reducers hardeners and even clear in the last coat and have had no trouble good luck.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with it.I'm going to do my car one section at a time while still driving it then go over it all after. I'm going over laquer,do u think I'll have to prime? If so what primer do u suggest? Is the JD in spray cans any good, like could I do each section with them and then spray it all with a gun?

Same old questions...

I'm sure everyone has read and answered these questions a bunch but i can't seem to satisfy them looking throuhg a million post pages here. plus I don't own a computer so i have to use the public library and time's limited. So here goes. I live in Vegas and have read people bought JDBB here, but where, I can't find it anywhere. Next, I'll probably only spray 2 vehicles in the foreseeable future, what gun can I buy that is cheap, but not a POS. I have access to a good compressor so I could buy an HVLP gun, but all the nozzle sizes are strange. What is a good, cheap gun (harbor freight #, etc.) I've done a decent amount of graffiti, so I can probably use a low end one ok. Next, its getting pretty hot here in vegas. what is a good hardener to buy that is slow evap? Alright, thanks in advance for any help. If I get the f***er done i'll post some pics. its an offroad vegoil burning rat-cummins that I want to do, by the way. Body work and sanding done. Oh yeah, what are good primers (should I just get JD primer?) and reducer (again JD or what?). Thanks folks.

good guns

OK, i found the paint. I was having trouble with the jd website. now, i just need some gun info. Any opinions here on which harbor freight or otherwise guns are cheap but effective? Thanks. Also, any ideas on good reducers and hardeners or should I just stick with the JD brand stuff? Thanks again. cheers.
