Joining a Stock Car pit crew question?

I was asked by my uncle to help him in the pits with his Late Model Race Car. It has been around two years since he has raced the car and I am not sure the fire is still in his eyes for racing. I am trying to get him to get back into it because the way he talks during the week is that he is still interested in it but when it comes to race day or the day before he usually has an excuse that he is not going but never says he is not going because he doesn't want to.

During the race I was looking around and watching people and how they seemed to really enjoy being there. I am thinking that I would be interested in joining a pit crew, but if my uncle doesn't get back into racing what would I do? I'm not interested in having my own car or really even racing a car on the track, I enjoy watching the races and love to see the talent that is in the drivers seat and the work that goes into the cars, but I don't think it is for me. So finally here is my question. How would you solve this? Would it be weird if someone just came up to you as a racer and say "hey, can I join your pit crew?" What do you think, because I am kind of lost here on how to pursue this?

I would suggest wandering around the pits and see who's friendly. If you find somebody you like hanging out with, just do that and the rest will happen naturally. I say this as a drag racer though, never spent much time at the stock car tracks, might be a little different scenario....

Just head on down to the track and be there every week like so you can be counted on to show up. keep your lip zipped as circle track guys do not take kindly to advice or comments from guys they do not know. just do run and fetch stuff for folks so they get to know you and sooner or later you may be invited to join a crew.

I have tried most all of it and now do what is known to work..

It doesn't take much to get "racers rush" in your blood losing it is another story.I ran 1/4 mile dirt for 3 years in the late 60's early 70's then came the divorce and things came to a halt in a hurry.I still have fire in the belly and would love to jump back in a street stocker and taste dirt and bang fenders 40 years later but the bucks to do it are not in my wallet these days.
