Post Jon just curious

Jon I was just curious how much you make in donations vs the cost to run this site. You don't have to say but I am curious. I'd love to see a hotrodders.com car show take place with a 5 buck entry fee that goes to the site. I dunno I think too much but it would be really cool to see some of these cars in real life.. Of course mine probably wouldn't be there for OBVIOUS REASONS (embarassment mainly)

We make money on this site in four ways:

1. paid classified ads ($18 for selling a vehicle)
2. $49 submission fee for business websites into the Hot Rod Search Engine
3. a small number of advertisers
4. donations

We spend money on this site in five ways:

1. hosting fees -- $385/month
2. additional bandwidth costs at $2/gig -- $100/month
3. sending out our newsletters to 30,000 people -- $120/month
4. miscellaneous stuff -- $200-$250/month
5. pizza and beer -- $150-$200/month (we call this "salary" )

Donations have died down lately, but we are doing OK, so that's fine .

In the future, should we want to expand into the "real" world, here are the options we've discussed previously:

1. get more advertisers
2. sell stuff
3. charge for show admission
4. charge for membership

#1 is a sketchy proposal. Advertising must always be handled with extreme caution. White gloves and 10-foot poles.

#3, while not a bad idea, feels weird. I don't believe that people should be charged for showing their car. If anything, they should get paid. They are the show.

#4 isn't really a bad idea. I like free stuff though, and it's easier to grow a website when it's free.

#2 may work out. Ideally, I'd like to sell the parts that are manufactured by board members. We have all of the online payment processing stuff setup, but there are other logistical necessities, like organizing a stellar parts tech support system, that would have to be in place first.

Financially, the site generally breaks even. So we don't really worry about money. This is a distinct, rare pleasure in life.

The only thing I'd really like to put some money towards is t-shirts. It will happen soon. Please no t-shirt design contests in this thread .

If we had millions of dollars, there's two things I know we'd do.

1. We'd have a few guys from the board build us a nice, unique, original rod, and pay them to travel around the country in it and spread the word about Hotrodders.

2. We'd also rent a hangar, and outfit it with a garage with many bays, and a machine shop. Then, I'd hire out as many of the more experienced rodders as we could from the board. They'd do buildups and projects on cars day long, and we'd have digital photographers and videographers recording every step. Then, you could come to the Knowledge Base every day, and there'd be new project videos and pics to check out for free.

We've had offers that could've made both #1 and #2 possible, but we would have had to sacrifice values that are fundamental to this community.

Yeah then again ads wouldn't be bad if you select them carefuly and they aren't plastered all over the place. a singe banner ad on each page would be bearable to keep the site goin.

T-Shirts, Hats, & Bumper or window stickers. I'd be interested in all three.

Regarding T-shirts...how about a Classic white shirt with a simple logo like in the good old days? You remember, when you read a T-shirt feet and know exactly who it was endorsing! No 12 color complicated unreadable artwork, just a couple colors and a neat simple logo with name in readable lettering.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

OK here’s my two cents in the money spectrum.

I’m a member of the forum “Airbrush Technique” and they keep certain parts of the forum like the “How To” sections for paying customers and all the how to’s are taken right from the small magazine they publish with help from there contributing members. Each member who wants to do a “how to” just documents there project by taking photos and then explaining them step by step then that info is edited for the publication by other forum members,

so it’s really a community effort taken on by forum members.

It’s a small magazine published 6 times a year but it’s packed with tons of “How To’s” and it’s really a must have for the beginner to intermediate airbrusher, then by doing this they can advertise without clogging up the forums and make money at the same time.

The contents of all the published magazines are then put in computer forum format and access to these forums are sold as an “online magazine subscription” so it’s really two ways to make money on one magazine put together by the best artist’s of the forum.

With all the members here I’m sure you’d have no problem selling a magazine full of AWSOME " How To's " along with a online magazine forum, and still keep all your General forums free of charge.

And as I’m sure you know HOT RODING started in Joe Blows backyard garage, and here’s his chance for everyone to see how he did it!

No offence intended but I see you’re here posting, lol.

Besides I’m sure there’s lot’s of people here who would love to be published!
And possibly even pay to be at that.

Rick.
