The steering box assembled with new bushings and bearings,
tightened things up too much.
One forum said the box's history the other no comment.
I looked at laying a saginaw on it's side, and may still have to.
But this morning I thought I'd give it one more shot.
I shimmed, by .050 , the adjuster assy. And got good results
on the bench. I'll clean it up, paint and install tomorrow.
I'll have to take care when it hits the road again, but I'll be
breaking in a new motor anyway. Not interested in doing a
new front end/power steering blah, blah, blah.

Pulled the master cylinder and the clutch lever, waiting on Waltons.
Got the steering box together on the bench.
Still got play, thinking it's got to be in the worm on the bearings.
Have to look that up.

01-21-2014 04:04 PM the quickest turn around ever
I know you aren't supposed to advertise some one,
but technically this isn't a thread. It's a diarea.
I took my steering column to Redhead steering gear
in north Seattle about 1pm yesterday.
at 4 pm they called it was finished, got it this morning.
I know it was lucky timing, the guy to work on it was just finishing
up his project, but I've had motor cycle parts sit on a bench for
weeks before they even look at them.
Thanks guys.
Cut the clearence hole in firewall today, thats about it.

Had to read up on the coolest space probe ever.
Right out of a 50's comic book, humans are going to land on a comet.

01-20-2014 01:24 PM welding done for now
I think
I put the steering rod in the box, and of course the heat
bent it. I did weld it plenty hot. You can see the square tipped up at the long end.
Three tries in the press straightened it out.
Put the column in tight, tacked it up.
apart again and welded it.
Welds are a little lumpy, but I don't weld every day.

And I don't grind them off on anything that needs strength.
The next guy in line can put in the new front end and steering column.
Off to get the bushings changed out.
