Photo #1 is the stop piece itself. It's 1/8" flat stock, 2" wide and cut to length. It will extend 3/4" into the trunk opening and be covered with 3/4" wide weatherstrip to provide a seal against the bottom of the trunk lid ribs.

Photo #2 Here is the stop piece being bent to fit to the underside of the spacer piece.

Photo #3 The stop piece is clamped for spot welding.

02-16-2005 07:42 PM Rat - Trunk drip edge/stop
With the skeleton for the trunk lid completed I now need a lip around the inside of the trunk opening to act as a stop for closing the trunk and to also provide at least a modest barrier preventing water from getting into the trunk. I will make the drip edge by first installing a 3/16 spacer around the perimeter of the trunk opening on the underside of the existing ribs and cross members. I will then install the actual stop to the underside of the spacer. The use of the spacer allows me to install a piece of 3/16 weatherstrip on top of the stop to act as a seal when the trunk is closed.

Photo #1 shows the spacer piece being bent to fit the underside of the rib at the edge of the trunk opening. the spacer is 3/16 flat stock 1 1/4" wide.

Photo #2 shows the spacer piece clamped for tack welding.

Photo #3 shows the spacer piece tack welded in place.

Photo #1 shows the hinge from the underside with the trunk lid closed. You can see in this shot how the horizontal legs of the front and rear hinge pieces were overlapped and then welded together. This allowed me some room for error in positioning the pivot point of the hinge.

Photo #2 shows the hinge from below with the trunk lid in the open position.

Photo #3 is another view of of the pivot mechanism with the trunk closed.

The hinge parts were then positioned and tack welded in place. I then removed the trunk lid and hinge to give me better access to complete the welds.

Photo #1 is the trunk lid (shown here upside down) with the main portion of the hinge attached to it.

Photo #2 shows the hinge installed with the trunk lid in the closed position. Note the bolt through the pivot mounting bracket (1x1 square tube welded to the body skeleton) and then extending through the pivot tube (with bushing inside) and then screwed into the nut which is welded to the top rib of the body skeleton. The hinge thus has two removal points. The trunk lid can be unbolted from the rear portion of the hinge (leaving the entire hinge attached to the body) or the pivot bolt can be removed and the entire hinge taken out while attached to the trunk lid.

Photo #3 shows the hinge with the trunk lid in the open position.
