Photo #1 Here are the mounting holes drilled in the hinge arm.

Photo #2 The door is now hung, bolted in place, and supported totally by the hinges.

Photo #3 Here is a more complete view of the car with the drivers side door frame completed and hung. I will now repeat these steps to build and install the passenger side door frame.

02-09-2005 08:55 PM Rat - Door - hinge mounting bracket
Photo #1 Now that I know the door will swing open and closed properly I can fabricate and position permanent brackets on the door frame to bolt to the hinges. I am using 1x2 rectangular tubing for the brackets. Here you see I have cut the tubing to length and drilled three holes for the attachment bolts.

Photo #2 & #3 The brackets and the door frame are now clamped tightly to the hinges and the brackets are ready to be welded to the door frame. After welding in the brackets the three mounting holes can be marked on the hinge. The hinge is then removed and drilled in the drill press.

Photo #1 Once I had the door positioned correctly in the opening I clamped each hinge arm solidly to the door frame to test if my hinges are going to function properly. This shot shows the door closed...but more importantly shows Buster up in front of the car letting me know all the things I am doing wrong.

Photo #2 Shows the door in the partially open position.

Photo #3 Shows the door swung fully open. There are a few minor adjustments yet to be made but the door appears to fit in the opening, the hinges appear to work properly, and the striker bolt engages the claw as it should.

Photo #1 is a close up showing the fit of the new striker bolt in the claw of the latch. Note that just to the right of the bolt head you can see the access hole which is used to tighten the striker bolt (and was used to mark for driller the bolt hole).

Photo #2 The door frame pieces can now be welded. The pieces must be firmly clamped to a solid surface while they are welded. It is very important that the frame be absolutely square while it is welded and that warpage be kept to a minimum.

Photo #3 The welded door frame is then set in the door opening to check for warpage and alignment. I used 3/16" spacers on each side and the bottom to maintain the correct clearances.

Photo #1 I then cut an access hole in the back side of the rear door frame piece so I can slip the nut in place.

Photo #2 Shows the nut and bolt installed on the frame piece. Obviously, the washer is too large and must be cut off (it is sized so that it will not come off without cutting it) and replaced with a much smaller washer.

Photo #3 With the striker bolt in place I once again mock up the rear door frame piece to make sure it mates correctly with the "claw" of the latch.
