07-25-2004 11:50 AM Fixing bad welding
Check out the bad welding in the first pic. This is where a different front clip was installed by the previous owner. Today I started "cleaning" that up by grinding it down a bit and rewelding it with the MIG. Some of the new welds can be seen in the second pic. The third pic shows where the new welds have been ground smooth. In some places I'll go over with the welder again to make sure it's good.

07-22-2004 02:45 PM Radiator shroud
Here is the radiator shroud I made for the '53. In the first pic you can see the "studs" which are just some M8 by 15mm bolts. I tack welded their heads to the sheetmetal on the other side so that I won't need a spanner or socket on that side when removing/installing the fans. The second just shows the two 10" fans sitting in position.

07-16-2004 05:21 AM Rear suspension to be re-mounted
Due to the previous 'builder' not doing a good job I need to remove the rear suspension totally and make new mounting brackets. For starters, the axle doesn't sit straight in the chassis as the one side is about half inch further forward than the other.

Pic 1: I don't like the round tubing used to mount the top arms and the spring 'plate'. I'm replacing this with 50mm x 50mm by 3mm square tubing. The spring plates will also be redone.

Pics 2 and 3: Due to the round tubing these mounting brackets were not made accurately or neatly. This will be 'cured' when I install the square tube.

07-16-2004 04:53 AM Ride height to be adjusted
If you look at the length of the rear coil springs as shown here you can see why the car is sitting so high in the rear as can be seen in the second pic. I measured the height from the ground at the front of the body behind the front wheel and at the rear just ahead of the rear wheels. The rear was about 75mm (3 inches) higher! So, after I have lowered the front suspension by 3 inches the rear will have to come down 6 inches to enable the body to sit level.

07-16-2004 04:45 AM Body off
The body had to come off so I could clean and spray the chassis and to do some other chassis work. My brother-in-law donated some 50mm x 50mm x 2mm square tubing he had from which I made two tresles to place the body on. They are high enough to allow me to push the chassis out from under it. I used my chain block to first lift the front and place a tresle there and then the rear.
