The worst dent the car has is towards the left rear on the roof as can be seen in the first pic. Both the front fenders are still good with minor uneveness and no rot.

Just some more shots of rust. These pics show the tops of the rockers leading into the floor area. Again, not a major train smash. It's something to be expected.

I will however not just do 'normal' repairs here. As it goes with any new project that one buys, your mind goes to work on the design right from the onset.

I'm planning on channeling the body over the chassis which will call for the whole floor to be cut out. I will then build a complete floor framework containing new bodymounts. Onto this new framework I will install brand new sheet metal for the floors. All this work will result in a raised floor which in turn will cause the body to sit lower over the chassis without touching the suspension.

The left front door has a little rust as can be seen in the first pic and the second pic shows that the bottom inch or so of the trunk lid has also rusted away.

The third pic shows the trunk floor with the spare wheel well having the most rust. The rest of the floor looks ok and most of the floor pans also look ok.

Also, not shown in any photos is the bottoms of the doors of where the driver's door especially has lots of rust. I havent really checked the bottoms of the other doors yet.

I saw the ad for this car in the Junkmail classifieds for only R800. It wasn't really as complete as was said but I'm not complaining or pointing fingers as I feel it's still a bargain.

There is some rot on the body but very little and nothing that can't be fixed. The front fenders and bumper, which are missing in these shots, are inside the car but unfortunately there's no grille.

Some of the glass is cracked but that's also nothing as the cracked ones are all flat and not curved. The guy did have an old army tarpaulin over the car which help a little bit to keep most rain out.

I still need to go and fetch the engine and transmission but will most probably not keep. At this stage I don't yet know if I will use the usual small block V8 or a later model inline 6. I might also look at other engine options, maybe even a Hemi. That's to say if I can get one at a fair price.

If any South African person reading this knows where I can find a grille and a dashboard for this 1948 Chevy, please let me know. I'll really appreciate it. Otherwise I'll just have to fabricate my own as importing such large items is not an option. The shipping cost is what kills you in the end.

02-19-2006 12:37 PM Release catch for trunk lid pt.4
The first pic shows the "shaft" and the two piece which will form the "arms" into which the end of the cable must hook.

The second pic shows the two "arms" tacked to the shaft and the last pic shows the excess on the shaft trimmed off. The small slot you see on the front piece from the hole to the side is where the cable must pass through. The cable will then sit between the two arms with the cylindrical cable end sitting in the holes allowing it to "rotate" freely.
