For the last three nights after work, the body has been massaged until my hands ache. First, there is more sheet metal there than I thought. Second, there was more paint remnants and rust bloom than I thought. Finally, the nooks and crannies took forever.
Tonight I intend to make final touch-ups and do some masking.
A couple of meetings after lunch ran long, so I got a late start.
I went over the entire bottom with a scuff pad to make sure everything had some ''tooth.'' Wiped everything down with acetone. Then wiped everything down with wax and grease remover. Finally, a quick wipe down with a tack rag.
So after years of cutting, fitting, welding, grinding, and cleaning, it took less than an hour to get two coats of epoxy on the underside of the floor. I think I spent more time prepping before and cleaning up after than I actually spent squirting paint. But it looks good.
So, Saturday I worked from sun up until way after sun down. No photos. Too dark!
Pulled the engine and tranny. I proved the body could be removed and installed with them in place. From here on out, it will be easier and quicker to do it with them out of the way until final assembly.
After thinking about it, I realized I could have done a little bit better on the underside. The front body supports on the inside got all the rust and crud blasted off. The toe boards were cleaned. The second back body mount was cleaned. Some other spots on the floor and support channels were improved.
I did take some time to try and help a friend install a back-up camera on his van. We got the camera mounted and that was about it. He is going to run the camera cable to the front. He will come back to get the power hook-ups done.
After the booth was swept out, the car was rolled back in (easier to roll with the engine and tranny gone as well). Body removed and chassis rolled into the next stall. Ready to knock off any bloom, mask, wax and grease remover, and squirt.
