1963

I was really proud of this design and still am. Sort of thought it wouldn't win being so radical, even by today's standards. This is my first plastic top, came out pretty good. Candy apple purple color. Drawer pulls as hubcaps. HO train rail was used as rear window trim. A link from an old bracelet is the hood ornament. Brass trim color throughout.

Here is the restoration I just finished last month. Note the replacement Eveready D-size battery end hub caps and AA-size battery end head lights. I had to bid for the old batteries on ebaY auctions 'cause this vintage battery was discontinued decades ago. I made a replacement bumper. Paint is hardware store rattle can enamel as original but I clear coated it with catalyzed urethane. The tires came in a kit furnished by Fisher Body and the aluminum parts were made from a kit of bar stock that I bought from them.

I didn't win any prizes with any of the cars but had a marvelous time making and entering them in the contest.

1962

My first car, 8th grade. Simple design, main problem is the proportion of the top. I built it w/ D size battery ends as hubcaps. Changed it to wire wheels when I got it back. Converted it back to battery ends when I restored it (next page). I looked at EVERYTHING I saw trying to find unique 1.25" diameter objects that could be turned into hubcaps! Rear bumper was a form fitted piece of aluminum wire. Will have to replace it. Headlights were Eveready AA battery ends filled w/ Elmer's glue. Perforated headlight grilles are made from one of my sister's aluminum hair curlers. Red necklace beads for tail lights.

The cars are in such bad shape for several reasons. First, they are 40 years old! They have been wrapped in towels and piled in a cardboard box and moved all over the country. The cars are wood and I just used a sealer of shellac before lacquer primer and enamel paint. Finally, I used Spackle for filler which has degraded over the years. Realize there wasn't the broad range of high quality fillers back then. Bondo was brand new and way out of my budget range.

06-17-2004 12:40 AM '53 AD extended cab how-to19
I am keeping the original instrument cluster including the original fuel gauge but the late model sending unit in the tank was not compatible. I fixed that by cutting the modern sending unit off the suction tube and brazing on the one from the '53 tank. I hack sawed the bracket for the unit and brazed it on as shown in the picture. The float is the '53 with a reshaped arm so it gives a full stroke from top to bottom of the new tank.

I spot brazed the electrical connecting link to the pickup on the old sending unit and it now works like it was made to be there.

Here are a few shots of the finished headlight pod. A little sanding, painting and chrome and it's ready for the road! Sounds easy doesn't it?
