I have been told many stories on what type of steering I should use. As I can't use the late model steering rack mounted to the front cross member due to bump steer, I was told to use a Suzuki four wheel drive unit. Then I was told to use a Toyota land cruiser or an xw Falcon. After looking at a lot of different types I found the VW Comby to be the easiest to fit, it clamps directly onto the main frame with 5 bolts. I machined the gearbox to get the steering box further forward so the shaft comes into the body above the brake peddle to avoid interference between the brake and accelerator. We are left hand drive here so there is not much room between the steering box and the starter motor.

Assembled the axle tubes to ensure they line up and all the parts fit back on. Acquired a set of XJ6 Jag rear springs for set up purposes these will be replace with fully adjustable spring over shocks later. Fitted the aluminum disk caliper brackets, all seem to fit fine.

05-29-2006 12:35 AM Diff Mods
Welded the four bar supports onto the axle tubes. Did not think about how far it would pull after Tig welding about ¼" total. Then welded the shock brackets on which pulled it back the other way. I had to straighten both sides in the press to realign then re-set up in the lathe to ensure the face plates were parallel with the bearings on the end.

Manufactured the 4 bar support bracket from ¼" S/Steel flat plate.
Photo 1 drilling the holes after cutting and linishing
Photo 2 tack welded the first side on
Photo 3 temporary bars add for setup
Where did January go?

12-23-2005 07:50 PM Diff Modes
I have decided to manufacture the diff tubes from Stainless Steel. I bought 3" schedule 80 tube and got two pieces of 3/8" plate profile cut for the inside flanges. I used ¼" plates to make the outside flanges. I machined the ends to fit the bearing inside, then tig welded the flanges inside and outside to the tube. I have used ½" grade 8.8 S/Steel bolts and doweled the top for alignment. I think I have gone overboard on strength once more.
These should polish up very nicely. Merry Christmas to all.
