I went to an insurance auction and won a 1991 Ford Fairmont for NZ$200.00. The car was still in very good condition as I drove it home. (50 miles) I ripped the motor and gearbox out and sold it for NZ$200.00 so all the parts I needed 8 ½" Diff with disc brakes, front stub axles, brake master cylinder and many more cost zero. Very hard to get a better deal than that.

After a lot of thought purchased an Ali water pump and Delco HEI high performance 50,000 volt distributor with coil, this should keep the cylinders pumping in time. Still require an intake manifold and decent carburetor.

09-22-2005 02:31 AM Front Spring
Got the front spring made from 1 ¾" by ¼" spring plate 4 leafs 26" long. Calculated I required approximately 400lb of continuous wait on the front end. Got the ends turned up as I am going to mount the spring above the axle so the axle ends up closer to the chassis.
This is required so I can use hydraulic shock absorbers. Bolted the spring in place used the engine lifter to lift up the chassis by the spring with motor and box in place. This compressed the spring as it would have if it was sitting on the ground. Tack welded the axle in place center to the spring.

09-22-2005 02:07 AM Perch Plates
Now that I have got the front cross spring manufactured its time to finish the perch bracket. I used 3/8" mild steel plate 4" wide, marked the pattern out using a hole punching machine I formed the curves. I then linished them together until they were smooth. Made the cross plate from 3/8" also, a-bit paranoid about strength and passing the vehicle certification. Tack welded and set it up center on the front round bar.

Joined the motor to the turbo 350 gearbox. Bolted the gearbox in place and set the motor up using the old manifold. Used an engineers level to make sure the carburetor would sit square and level. As my apprentice instructor always said may years ago tack first check double check wait a while check again then weld. I have decided to weld fully when I have nearly finished. It's a lot easier to remove something tacked than welded. After looking at the photo's I think I need to clean the shed up.
