07-11-2007 12:47 AM Made a wrench...
Got the Exaxt kits for the disc brake conversions on my Unimog 404 axles I'm putting under Bubba Hyde. Stock axles have drum brakes that have a Mog only bolt pattern (6 x 205mm) & require 20" rims or greater, making rim & tire selection really tough.

This kit replaces the hubs for use of 17" wheels and the standard 1-ton truck 8 bolt pattern, along with utilizing 1-ton Ford brake parts from a '97 F350, for ease of parts location.

However, the outer hub bolt is 55mm & torqued to !! 735 lb/ft !!

Without easy access to a 55mm impact socket, we had to fab a wrench for the job.

Used a scrap sheet of 1/2 plate (had some big parts cut out, but had the necessary shape left over. Plasma'd out a wrench. Pretty happy with the results. Used a 8' cheater pipe & was able to get the nuts off.

07-11-2007 12:37 AM Bubba Hyde rear 3-Link...
Been fabbing up the 3-Link mounts on the rear of the frame. There are 3 height positions, and enclosed access from in front of the rear crossmember.

Full details can be found on my Pirate4x4 build thread, if you're interested:

07-11-2007 12:33 AM Father / Son Cheap Truck Challenge...
Started a thread on Pirate4x4, with my son, Ryder (10), & I building cheap trucks for general wheeling fun.

He started with a $350 (from auction) '78 Jeep Cherokee Chief Wide Track.

For me, it's a $710 (from eBay) '78 Ford Bronco Ranger XLT.

We're building to be streetable, but setup for the trails, with a maximum tire size of 35" & no drivetrain alterations, other than a rear locker.

If you like, please check out the thread on Pirate:

Here are 3 pics of the kit from Exaxt. I am very impressed with the quality of the pieces, as well as the completeness of instructions and hardware. And the customer service is top notch.

Pics are the kit, the hardware unpackaged, and of the installed kit.
