I said yesterday I'd have the wagon all wrapped up today, and...
I WAS RIGHT!!!
New ball joints in, front ride height adjusted down just a touch, it's all finished up. Drives like a different car with the new ball joints and not kissing the bump stops. I can live with the slightly higher stance in exchange for good handling and ride quality, it's a huge difference.
I just have to make the mount for the drivers side skirt, and it's good to go.

Got the Pontiac Tin Woody going today, almost. When I took the front end apart to raise it a little (almost on the bumpstops) found the ball joints were shot. Huh, well, new ones are cheap. Should have it wrapped up tommorow.http://flynbrian48.wordpress.com/2010/05/07/117/

Note to self, "Radiators make poor bump stops."

Getting the '36 up to Lansing this afternoon to set up for this weekends "Conquerors Car Show" in Lansing, MI. It's all cleaned up, made some stantions to rope the car off, and gave me a reason and incentive to get the HOT ROD feature article matted and framed. Should be fun.

Today I tacked the spring perches to the axle after setting the pinion at the (hopefully) correct angle. I happily discovered that the driveshaft, the original, but with a new yoke at the front for the 4L60 trans, is now an inch too long. This is a good thing, as it needs to have a new yoke at the rear to accept the correct cross for the new axle, so it's good it's an inch too long!
The new axle, an '93 Roadmaster wagon with limited slip, is just over an inch wider than the original. While the tires clear the inner fenders OK, the fender skirts don't. So, I trimmed the lip back at the bottom, leaving only 1/4", removed the center clamp rod, and made a simple bracket at the back to bolt to the bottom of the quarter panel behind the wheel opening. It'll work, just have to have a 7/16" wrench to unbolt it.
I may modify the wheels by moving the rim inward on the center to get a little more clearance if need be, but I won't if it's not needed.
Next week I can get the driveshaft done, rebuild the brakes and hopefully get it back together. Has to be done by the middle of May for our first trip towing the trailer.
