09-04-2012 09:27 AM #24-95 Popcorn and Isaac
Thanks to hurricane Isaac one of the two shows I planned to attend this week on Saturday was canceled. The second show of the weekend was our home town Popcorn Festival on Sunday and even though misty drizzle was the weather I drove the few blocks over to the local park. Old Guy Fuzzy drove an hour down and joined me and we met with Bill and the others for a damp morning. Isaac finally finished passing through (leaving much needed rain) and the day cleared before noon. The show was less than half the entries of previous years due to the early rain and iffy chances of more. But, we brave souls had a great day and enjoyed the festival food (with peach cobbler and ice cream, and free popcorn) as well. The good news is that the problem with the brake lights is fixed-or at least they work and after a carburetor adjustment turned out to be too much I backed off and that problem may be solved, although a longer drive will tell.

08-27-2012 07:01 AM #23-94 The Follies!!
The Frog Follies are always a great show and once again it was much bigger and even better. However this one was also a disappointment. Fellow Old Guy Bill had been thrashing on his '46 Ford hot rod trying to get months of work done in just a few days. Too many untested systems came up to bite him, a serious alignment problem plus yet another engine issue. He couldn't get it done in spite of friends help and had to cancel out. We missed him.
The trip went well, for a two plus hour each way, on antique suspension. Some time in the last few days my brake lights have quit, didn't catch it until leaving town, but buddied up with Fuzzy following close in the '36 Chevy truck. Honorary Old Guy Ray Ballard rode along with us and will post some or all of the one thousand pictures he took on hotrodhotline. We walked for hours and saw hundreds of great pre-49 rides and totally enjoyed the excellent show. I bought a new brake light switch from one of the vendors but it didn't fix the problem so will need to dig deeper. Fortunately no misshaps or other problems there and back. Now to clean and fix for next weekend's two shows and check on Bill's hot rod progress.

08-21-2012 07:11 AM #22-93 Later that evening...
After cutting the awards a little short at the first show of the day, I hurried back to and through my home town and drove another 30 miles up to an evening show held for the local food bank. Was really glad to meet up with friend Bill and learn that his rebuilt engine is in and running. So another old guy's hot rod is ready for the street, just needs a little road testing. I don't think it's ready for the Frog Follies yet. This was another good show with plenty of fine rides, good weather, and terrific grilled burgers. Thanks for the fine evening.

08-21-2012 07:03 AM #21-92 A beautiful day for a drive
Temps in the mid seventies and clear sunny skies, so I took a leisurely drive through the country on my way to another charity car show. Several unfamiliar builds showed up along with many that I've seen all summer in this area. The old guys were spread out this weekend so this was a solo show but I enjoyed the fresh BBQ and visited with interested spectators and show friends. I will apologize to the Shriners for leaving toward the end of the awards so that I could attend a second charity show over a hour away. Thanks, it was a good show and I enjoyed the day.

This weekend's show was held along with an antique engine and tractor show. Some of us fit right in. The weather was great and the entries were as always interesting and well done. My only complaint is that the roads through this part of rural Illinois are a hazard to hot rod suspensions. I kept looking back to watch for parts in the road, there and back though with no losses. Next weekend I'll look for a better way as I plan to come back to the same area and try for two shows in the same day.
