Jr1979....overheating problem
I purchased a 79 TA with a 455 4 spd.. the car seem to be running a little hot around 220-230. i decided to go through the cooling system. i drain the radiator and found some dirty/rusty antifreeze at the end of the drain. I then pulled thermostats that foolish thing was bent to hell. never seen any thing like that before. i removed the water pump also. so i decides to fulsh water throung the block to see if i could get the rust & sediment out. once the water coming from the blocked looked clear. i install all the parts. when i took the car for a ride it seem to be worse. after about 20-30 minutes driving the temp runs up to the 240 range. I think some of the head ports are plugged.

or, you need a new rad, water pump or something along those lines.

Did you replace the thermostat?

What brand of motor?

Is the radiator larger than stock?

What type of gauge are you using? (brand, mechanical or electric sender)

Thermostat went from 195 to 160 ..Brand new Stand make.I even checked to make sure it worked. boiled it in a pan to it got to 160-170 than it opened.

Motor 455 came out of a 74 firebird

Radiator is new.. but i think its stock, But not sure if its 2-3 core

Gauge. is factory same with sending unit OME

Does the car have the factory fan and the factory shroud, in place?

Clutch type fan, or solid drive?

If clutch driven, is the clutch working correctly?

What psi radiator cap, and is it working correctly?

Look I will try to explain what is happening on the "Indian " blocks or "pontiac" engines if your themostat came out of the engine bent up or broken it is a sure sign of seperator plate damage the water pumps on the pontiac engines has a plate under the water pump that seperates it from the timing cover and directs the waterflow into the block when it rots out it comes apart and destroys the pump and thermostat it then deposits hunks of metal in the radiator and clogs it up if you need one it has been restamped and can be purchased from year one.
