Junkyard HEI

Just thought I would like to share some information on doing a junkyard HEI unit. Nothing is ever as easy as we think, not that this is or was hard, but just a lot of LITTLE things to do.

I got the HEI unit (base) from my junk man for a whooping $50.00 It was clean but did not come with the cap. Because the caps can be cracked, they do not want you to return it with out installing a new one. So off to the local parts store to get a cap. Well a cap is a cap and that is all. I opened the box and found a cap. No coil, no coil cover, no wire holder. So back I went. This time I get the coil and a coil cover. They do not have wire holders anymore. So I get it all home and read the instructions. Assembly was very straight forward. NOPE. Where are the screws that hold the coil in the cap? Where are the screws that hold the dust cover over the coil? So back I go again. No, they do not have those screws, they are to be taken from the old unit. Well it was Sunday, so I settled with going to Home Depot and locating the proper screws. Job complete. Cost $97.00 in cash. TIME = ......

PS. Thanks, I feel better now.

cap

[size=3]Doc here

I always INSIST on the cap as part of the deal. If the guy can't deal with that...walk on...

I'm not sure WHERE in California you are.. but I'm in the North bay Area, east of S.F.and the place I go is M Fernandez..Over in Concord. He'll let you (tell you) to go pull it yourself, and I always include the cap and Battery wire...never got charged extra for it either.

For just that reason I include the cap...Because of the hardware, and coil. Even though I always provide a new cap and rotor.

Sounds like you went to one of those "Sterile" Computerized places , where the recyclers's wear clean white jumpsuits , with a sparkling water bar in the lounge area...

"Yes sir.....Distributer..$50...Cap..$5...Coil ...$15...Cover..$2.50 ... screws...$1.50 each...button...$0.75... and please, make an appointment, and bring a core"...

You need to find an old school yard...like mine...

"Yeah, There's a couple in the yard out there, go pull one, and leave a half a yard in cash on the counter the way out" I could have half the block attached with it!"

I always include everything from the hold down to hardware when I do it myself...

If the guy say's "The Cap Could be Cracked" remind him that the ECM and pickup could be bad too...so those are exchangeable because their inside of it??? No thanks I'll take my chances on a cracked cap.."
