Just bought a 54 chev, how do I swap front ends??

People say I should swap front ends on the truck, and I do want to get rid of the solid front axle.
How do I go about doing this, what donar vehicle do I need.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Good idea

Upgrading that suspension is a good idea.If you are a rookie at this sort of thing there are lots of good books onthe subject with good illistrations. Or find someone you can trust that knows what he is doing, get him to help,no beer untill each session is over. You want good judgement to prevail here. Its nice to see todays rodder is more saftey consious than I was as a kid hackin on my 34. Jerry

This has been well covered in several threads..Check through the knowledge base and do a search on the site and you will find alot of info on doing an IFS swap on your truck..

Whats wrong with the stock setup??

I have had a dozen 49-53Chevy PU trucks...no kidding...some I have left stock...good drive train and reworked the brakes and did a quicky paint job on. Only one had a front suspension change..we used an Olds Omego and put in a sb chevy drive train. There are kits out there to upgrade your front brakes to disc. If your not going to run the 6-banger then you'll need to fab motor mounts or buy a kit for that too. The rear suspendion is simple to change...burn or grind off all the rivets on the brackets holding the rear springs after dropping the rear end and weld on new brackets to mount the newer spring setup you buy....remember to double check your overall front-wheel to rear-wheel measurement to put the rear end back where it belongs.

Check the link below my signature for one method of replacing your front end. Just click the 53 Chevy pickup button on the left side of the page when it opens.

54 chevy truck suspension

Hello In style-

I also own a 54 1/2 ton, I was going to put a mustang II type front suspension on and a 12 bolt rear, but ended up putting on a C4 corvette front and rear, the front crossmember kit was had at progressive auto in Ohio good bunch to work with, was a lot of work but I am pleased withe results and It costs me less than the MII in parts Labor was another thing. My friend put a 64 1/2 ton front suspension on his 53 its a little wider but it all depends on your goal and budget. check out my journal has some pics of it.
