Are you threading the machine correctly? Is your top thread going through the small guide right at the top of the needle shaft? Are you installing the bobbin correctly? Is the needle installed so that the groove on the back of the needle is facing to the left?

guess who needs to start wearing glasses when she threads her machine?

Thanks so much for your response. I had cleaned everything thoroughly, checked my threading, brought new spools of thread, and then when I saw your post I thought well, of course the needle is ok, have put new needles in many times. But, thought, well maybe the needle is defective, won't hurt to put a new one in. So in taking it out carefully checking it for problems I realized the long groove was on the opposite side. Duh!!!
Well ,put a new needle in anyway, correctly, with my glasses on, and guess what, machine is sewing great. So thanks for that reminder that even a very small detail can cause huge problems with sewing.

Believe it or not, my sewing machine mechanic tells me that 75% of the problems he gets on industrial machines are from the needle being installed backward. I did the same thing myself, that's why he told me. A lot of other problems are caused by the operator, not the machine.
