Post Just got the 500 running... (Caddy motor pics)

The 500 motor, sat 5 years... loud as hell with open heads...

The 472 motor... sat 4 years, getting running Tues nite...

"Ol' Yeller"- my spare 500 motor with a fresh bottom end, sitting on the homemade engine stand fabbed from 2x3 box tubing, a Pontiac swap-meet bellhousing, and an old Jeep 6-lug front spindle and hub assembly. The tubing thingie on the towel is the start of my tunnel ram intake manifold for "Ol' Yeller" once it's built and swapped into the '28. For now it looks like the 500 will go into the '28 and the 472 will go into the '54.

I get the shorttail TH-400 trans this coming Friday
for $100...

HG, did you get the car up on stands and get the passenger side axleshaft out of the car yet?
2 bolts on pan rail hold the bearing bracket, and a strap from the bearing bracket to the diff case. If the CV is already unbolted from the flange, pull the flange straight out the pass. side, it's just splined into the diff.

One bolt on DS motor mount/block holds the diff to the engine. Starter unbolts, and then turn the motor and get the 3 converter bolts out. Think there's a few small sheetmetal covers under the T/C area of the bellhousing also. Small bolts, hard to see/remove.

I know it sucks to work in the cold, I swapped the 500 into the '54 outside on a gravel driveway on a warm day. I distinctly remember the motor-under a tarp in front of the car, and shoveling snow around it to dig it out.

Frequent breaks help, as does bringing out just the tools you need to take out 2-3 bolts at a time. Get cold, grab the tools and warm up, run them and your hands under the sink. Worked for me.

Only good thing about where I'm at now is I ain't digging snow. Garage door faces South, with empty farm fields past the road, and the gasket under the door leaks cold air inside, I also get rainwater coming in and puddling under the back door. I've only run my barbecue bottle heater one time this past winter, no bux to get more propane. I go about as long as it takes me to have a smoke, and my hands are cold again, and I go in and get on the 'puter.

That is cool, I've got a 472 caddy, in my '70 coupe deville that sat for 14 years, got it running at the end of the summer, needs a tune-up but does run good. Just wondering how rare the 500's are, and what they're worth? A guy up the street as two '75 caddy's with 500's for sale $300 bucks each, one has low km's (around 60,000km) and I can't remember what the other had on it. I don't want them personally, but it seems like a good deal. I dunno could be wrong.

the 75 500 is not as sought after as the 70 one is, which is due to the fact that it is a lower performing engine than the earlier one. also the pre 1972 cylinder heads are better performence heads..

75´500,4bbl,Hp:210@3600 Tq:380@2000 bore/stroke:4.300/4.304 Cr:8.25-1

70´500,4bbl,Hp:400@4400 Tq:550@3000 bore/stroke:4.300/4.304 Cr:10.0-1

70´472,4bbl,Hp:375@4400 Tq:525@3000 bore/stroke:4.300/4.304 Cr:10.0-1

but swapping the crank from a 500 into a 472(thus turning it into a 500) requires only different pistons.... question is if you want the hastle fro 25 Hp and 25 ft.lbs??
