Just need a little carb help
So I haven't rebuilt many carbs and asked a friend of mine to come over and supervise just to be safe when I decided to rebuild and re-jet my cater afb. Unfortunately he ended up disassembling the entire thing right before my eyes so I'm having a tough time putting everything back in its proper place. I've got all the jets and the metering rods swapped out and the venturis back in, I've got it about 90% figured out but for the life of me I cant figure out which way the butterflies go back in (yes he pulled the throttle shafts out) now the secondary ones look like they could go in anyway they'll fit but the primaries have notches on one side and I'm sure they serve a purpose. Anyone have an idea to how they need to be installed?

Alright so a little more effort and I figured out the holes aren't centered so they only go in one way. So I the primaries are in and run smoothly but I'm a little hesitant on calling the secondaries good, I've gotten them to run smooth but they dont completely close like the primaries, is this normal? Or should they close flush with the bottom of the carb?

Well I finally got it figured out, maybe someone with a similar problem will come across this but the butterflies actually are slightly tapered on the edges because they dont sit perfectly flat when closed so if you flip it around until you match the taper to the angle they go in prefect then just minor adjustments s

For future reference, the rebuild manual for my quadrajet recommended marking each of the plates to show exactly the position and orientation it was installed. I don't know how critical it was to get everything back in the same place on the quadrajet (as it appears to be on the AFB), but my magic marker arrows made it easy to figure out. I just had to remember to not put the plates in the carb cleaner.
I also took a lot of pictures of the linkage before I took out the plates and shafts, and tried to get a view that showed exactly what lined up in various positions. It was hard to get a view of all the parts each time, but it was very useful during reassembly. Bruce |
