Post Just to be sure on SBC

Ok, I am once again putting the distributor in. I had my friend bump the starter until my thumb poped out the #1 plug hole and then lined up the mark at O and did the feel with the piece of bailing wire trick and I can feel the #1 piston is at TDC. Do I still need to pull the valve covers and make sure both #1 valves are closed so I know I am on the comp stroke and not the exaust TDC stroke? This has always worked in the past but reading all these posts on here has got me paraniod! If I was on #6 Compresion and #1 exahst would it still run? Would it be obvious that it was wrong? Thanks I will never ask again! One more thing as I remember(on a HEI) #1 on the cap is just clockwise of the #2 and #7 and #2 stratle the coil / tach inputs, correct? Zach

Yes on the position of the #1 post of the cap (with that post pointing at #1 cylinder for easy reference). If it's on #6 power stroke and #1 overlap, it would be very apparent when you tried to start the motor (flames through the carb/farting and spitting at least). If this were the case, you would be the proverbial 180 out. From the description you gave, just stab the distributor, and you should be OK.
