K10 ignition switch moves with column shift

When I shift through the gears on my 87 Chevy pickup, the ignition switch and its housing move along with the lever for about an inch or two. In other words, when I shift from park to drive, the ignition switch (along with its housing) rotates about 45 degrees clockwise (inconsistently). I'm hesitant to pull the steering wheel off without having a good idea of what's behind there.

Does anyone know how that ignition switch assembly is fastened to the column, and how it may be damaged in my case? This truck does have tilt.

Thanks
