Kart Engine Tunin

Hi

I am looking at buying a kart and I found one which says this about it:

RACING KART CLASS 100, Wright National chassis fitted with a VERY FAST! tuned IAME 100cc engine that has only been used for 1 hour scince a complete rebuild, Direct drive bump and go with easy-start wheel, Top quality TILLET seat, New chain and sprockets, New front and side pods, Vented rear disc brake, Good sticky BRIDGESTONE slick tyres,This kart is in very good condition and has been well maintained, Needs nothing and is ready to use, NOT A TOY 70- 80 MPH+ TOP SPEED!! 500

Im not really very experienced with kart engines, but does anyone know how often Im likely to have to get the engine rebuilt, if I take good care of it??

My son and I raced for a few years. We ran 5 hp Briggs and Stratton. The guys that we know tried to get us into 2-cylces, but they sound too much like chain saws, and they sound too much like work. They told me that they usually have them rebuilt every year or two. Supposedly they hold up very well for racing motors.

Every 2 or 3 years is probably right. If you are racing though and want to be competitive it would be much more often. You wouldn't need a complete rebuild but the rings tend to wear pretty quickly and they would need replaced, the motocross guys that are competive usually do a top end a couple times a season depending on how often they race. If your just going to plunk around and get kicks you can just run it until it doesn't have the edge it has when you first get it.

The guy that did our Briggs motors had a son that won several National Championships. He ran twin 2 strokers at Daytona in a Laydown Kart, reportedly doing 190 MPH. The man always talked about how little he had to do to them. That was until I ask him about building one for me. When he realized what he would loose by not building me 6 or 8 motors or more a year, he changed his tune.

I used to race motorcross, i had to rebuild my 2 stroker,once a year. thats pretty darn good cause im talkin about a high performance motor too. 2 strokes are really simple to rebuild. There is a little more maintenance on the 2 strokers then the 4 strokes, but it is worth it, i would take a 2 stroke over a 4 stroke anyday. The power is so much greater in a 2 stroke, the powerbands are amazing. Thats just my 2 cents.
