Keyless Entry - Relay Switch Confusion

I've installed the AutoLoc Keyless Entry KL400 4 Channel system onto my 1990 Scottsdale - which has No Power Locks nor Power Windows. I have successfully been able to get the key fob to activate the left and right door solenoids and I'm trying to connect a really small push button switch, on the door panel to open the doors from the inside, using the same solenoid activator. I'm using the normal 30 amp relay and have connected one lead wire from the switch, to the number "85" terminal and the other wire to # "86", but nothing happens. I was being taught by a friend, about how those two terminals actually power up the magnet which pulls down the larger switch that connects "87" and "30" which are meant to handle the heavy current that needs to flow. My logic seems to make sense, but fact is, it isn't working; therefore, something's amuck with my dumb-luck. I'd really appreciate someone setting me straight!!!

You are correct that the 85 and 86 terminals are the trigger for the relay. For the relay to work, one of these terminals needs to have power and the other terminal needs to be grounded.

For reference, here is the installation instructions for your system:
http://files.thehoffmangroup.com/instructions/KL400.pdf

The way this particular system is wired, the receiver switches the ground side of the circuit. In the manufacturers diagram, the relay's 86 terminal has power all the time, and the 85 terminal is wired into the receiver output wire.

The simple way to do what you are asking is to take one wire from your pushbutton and connect it to the wire going to the 85 terminal of the relay (the wire that goes to the receiver); and connect the other wire from the pushbutton to ground.

Hope this helps...

Joe!

OH, now I get it! Basically, when the KL400 transponder is sending a signal to the relay, it's actually just providing "ground" as opposed to actually sending any kind of a "power". For some reason, in my mind, I thought that because the sending unit has a positive and a negative wire to "power it up", that it was sending a "positive" signal but if I understand you correctly, it's only "sending" a "Grounding" signal? Right? I've read the attached "diagram" from AutoLoc, over and over, and never made the connection that the relay was getting a "grounded" signal from the transmitter unit. I can hardly wait to get through my morning work so I can pop out into the shop tomorrow to try this out. I only spent 2 1/2 hours on it tonight, plugging, poking wires with an Ohm meter......augh! Basic logic wins again! Thank you soooo much! !

Problem Resolved thanks to Joe's instruction!

Hey Joe,

Thanks again for the simple solution! Looks like I learned something new, thanks to you. Too bad someone doesn't educate AutoLoc into giving just a little bit more info on how to wire up the simple door switches. I mean really, how much more ink would it take to put in a simple diagram that connects one lead from the Little Red Button to a ground and the other end to the 85 terminal on the relay? I stopped by my hobby shop, early this a.m., just so I could test your instructions - everything works - natch! BTW - I checked out your gallery.....nice ride man! That blown motor has gotta sound mean! Thanks again!
