Personally, I would NOT spend a grand on ANY used engine UNLESS I knew for certain what was in it, how it was built and WHO built it and how far it had been bored and how many miles on it. Just too much in my book. Any unknown engine should be torn down and checked, unless you feel like gambling on it. Even for a good stock builder 400, I wouldn't pay more than 250 for it.

I agree with Jmark, but if you know the engine and are comfortable with the cost then its up to you whether you want to spend the money. Go for the aluminum intake, hopefuly it's a dual plane. I do have to say though that without knowing what this engine is built with it's hard to say what you're getting, but it should be better that a 305. The best way to check for engine condition is a leak down test and compression test.

I recently bought my complete 400 with everything....intake carb manifolds for 300 bucks. It was a gamble with unknown history...especially since I went ahead and bought it off ebay(had it delivered for free to to me door from Idaho too!) but it turned out to be never rebuilt with standard bore and everything is good. Im also a young kid...16...and I also have a nova...but mines a 72 - just take your time and look for deals

how is it running in his Chevelle?????

How does the motor run?
Why is he taking it out
One grand
or ten big faces is alot for a 400
unless he has a good set of heads on it
stock heads,stock parts=500.00 to 600.00 bucks
you dont need a 400 in a nova

but neither did I(LOL).....

I got a sbc 400 for free from my father about 2 years ago. block is in good shape. Maybe you should consider other options. You can look for a 350 to build less than grand and it be a performer. I built mine into a 355 and run 12s in the 1/4. just over 1 grand. Its in a 72 nova also. I'm 22 and have been experimenting with it for 5 years. Your options depend on your pocket.

The guys over on the SS Monte site tell me a decent 400 small block is worth $300 - $400. For just the block. As long as it hasn't been bored out any.

A $1,000 for a running may not be too out of the question, but not knowing any of it's history is. My $0.02 on this $1,000 for this 400 definately is.

The combo is
.250 domes, It had world sportsman 2s 64 cc combustion chamber.
vic jr. intake 750 holley mech. secondaries
12:1 compression
camshaft is part# clc5hs from doug herbert
And its a claimer. 5.7 factory truck x rods, cast crank and the pistons are hypereutectic pistons
don't buy everything new, shop for good products at swap meets and search the net. I have a total in this motor 1300$
This doesn't include the rest of the car. 3500 stall and new tranny cost alot more.
