kinda a dumb question

OK heres my question. my oil pan is leaking going to tackle this weekend.i have a Chevy 400 small block and was wondering does it have a 2 piece rear main. and if it does i know the trans has to come out to get to the top one do you have to drop the crank to get it out and to reinstall.and when reinstalling the oil pan does it need a gasket or just black rtv silicone or both.

the last year of the 400 was 1980, chevy didn`t introduce the 1 piece seal crank until 1986. Unless it`s a aftermarket stroker crank, than it`s a 2 piece seal. You can remove the oil pan alone to get access to the seal. If your going to replace it, set it where it`s offset and not at the cap parting line, use small dabs of RTV sealant on each end, but not so much it presses out onto the crank journal. coat the seal real good with vaseline and let it sit and absorb it for a while before you install it, this will insure the seal doesn`t get a dry start. if you do so with this method, it might stop it from leaking a little while, most of the time if the leak isn`t excessive, I don`t bother, since they just leak again over time. You`d only have to remove the tranny if it was a 1 piece seal, the 2 piece you can push right out.

you should really try and figure out where it is coming from first if you can but it is a two piece rear main seal and felpro and others have a new one piece oil pan gasket out, well its been out for a few yrs now but not everyone knows about it.they are about 30-35.00 and you can't afford to be without one of these.if your pan leaks now it won't later.it fixed my leak and i was so sick of it.also you do not use any sealer with it.

a 1 piece oil pan gasket isn`t the same as the rear main seal gasket, when the rear main seal leaks oil is going by the seal and the crank journal, the rear of the oil pan rides on top of the rear main cap, so the oil is free to the outside once it gets past the rear main seal.
