I'm trying to hook up a knock sensor as a tuning aid on my
95 351 Lightning engine, somewhat modified for performance,
that I installed in my 89 Lincoln Mark VII LSC.

A knock sensing function isn't built into the engine computer,
but I would try to just have it trigger an indicator light when
the threshold level is exceeded.

Late 80's up thru 91 Crown Vic's with 351's had knock sensors,
but I've been unable to find where they're mounted.

I'm trying to hook up an oem sensor for the particular engine
style as I understand they have to be accoustically tuned
to the particular engine block.

Many 302's had them mounted in a threaded hole on the top back
of the block behind the pass side of the intake, but my 351
doesn't have a threaded hole there, or a sufficiently sized pad to
drill and tap a hole.

I'm thinking they were screwed into the side of the block, maybe
in one of the drain plug holes?

Doesn't MSD have a system where if it senses detonation it retards the ignition lead? Maybe this would work for you better....

Yes, they do, but it's $180 and is Universal, which means it has to
be tuned by the user to the specific engine. Also, it's just an alert,
according to the description on Summit Racing.

(They say to best use it, an MSD adjustable timing control is needed.
Another $150 +/-. Cheaper just to back out of the throttle when you
know excessive knock is occurring.)

To me, that leaves too much to chance.

The oem one would be tuned to the specific engine combo
by the engine manufacturer.

Plus, the oem type knock sensor is about $40 plus a simple indicator
light would keep me under $50 and probly be better matched to my
particular engine.

I have never seen an 80s Crown Vic with a 351/ 5.8

I have never seen a 5.0 with a knock sensor.

351/5.8 in Broncos in the 90s had knock sensors at the rear of the intake manifold. We sold our 95 4wd Eddie Baurer not long ago and I had to install a knock sensor in it.

I haven't seen a 5.8 Crown Vic, either, but the Autozone online
catalogues says about 18% of them did, and the Standard ignition
parts online catalogue lists a knock sensor for that application.

There were 2 years that 302 Mustangs had them, and
there were several years of 302 powered light trucks
that had them.

So, still looking.

If you do a search for rebuilt Ford 302/5.0 engines, you'll find an
outfit that lists a lot of light truck 302's with knock sensors.
