L48 engine and head swap

I have a 1977 L 48 corvette engine that I am rebuilding and I am thinking about adding some used vortec heads and manifold from a salvage yard after a conditioning. What casting number should I be looking for and normally what engine would I find them on. Also will most of them be able to be used on a Gen 1 block without modification. I know that there is a casting number that is generally not a good one. I also understand that they are normally on Chevy trucks. Thanks for any advice.

You`ll be looking for 062 and 906 Casting numbers. They came on 1996 and up 350`s that were in C1500 and C2500 pickups. There isn`t a "bad" vortec casting number except for the 305 vortec head. If you find some in the yard, find out if you can return them if they are cracked. Take them to a machinist and have them magnafluxed to be sure they are crack free. If you plan to run a carb then you`ll need a aftermarket intake that will bolt up to the vortecs. Make sure you keep the rocker arms that are on the heads as they are self aligning, you`ll need them unless you plan to use guide plates. No other mods are needed to run these heads on a older SBC.
