Late model flywheel vs old

Hey guys, this is my first post and I must say this is a nice forum ya'll have got going here.

Ok, enough sucking up, lets get to the question.

I'm building a 4 bolt main sbc 400, it's getting a set of 882 2.02 heads preformer rpm, roller rockers and lifters and a hot marine cam since It is gonna go in a little bayliner capri. It would touch 50 with the 305 it came with so it should scoot along pretty good....

Here's the problem, the boat currently has a 88' 305. One piece rear main seal. Didn't those come with a diffrent flywheel than a standard old school sbc?

I know the 400 is an externally balanced engine, I was gonna use one of those bolt on balance plates until my brother informed me that the new style flywheel won't bolt up to an old.

So the question is then... Is it possible to modify a late model to fit the ol' 400? If not I'll just build a mild 350 and be done with it...

And while I'm here posting.. Anybody ever put one of those 4'' stroker cranks in their 400? Is it worth the extra cost?

-Matt

Nope,......

The Post-86 motors use a 3" crankshaft bolt pattern,.....
And,....
The Pre-87 motors use a 3, 1/4" pattern......

Is your boat Mercruiser or OMC powered,..??..??

There are Adapters available for the Mercruisers......
